Brief: Stringfellow Road Opens To Four Lanes Monday

Paving, striping, signal work this weekend to open six months ahead of schedule.

— On Monday, Dec. 15, drivers will enjoy two lanes in each direction from Fair Lakes Boulevard to Route 50 on the newly widened two-mile section of Stringfellow Road, a milestone for the project that is six months ahead of schedule.

On Friday, Dec. 12, crews will shift northbound traffic from the existing lane to the two newly constructed lanes. Drivers will continue to have one lane southbound while crews finish work to open both lanes by Monday afternoon. All turn lanes and permanent signals will be in place.

Beginning today through the weekend, drivers are asked to use alternate routes as crews will need intermittent lane closures and flagging operations prior to the traffic shifts. They will finish extensive paving at the north end of Stringfellow Road from Rt. 50 to Jasper Road, as well as striping and signal work at the seven intersections.

Fairfax County Police will direct traffic during the shifts. The partial ramp closure from Fair Lakes Parkway to northbound Stringfellow Road will also reopen.

Over the next few months, drivers can expect minor lane closures for median work and punch list items. Final surface paving and striping will take place with warmer temperatures in the spring. The project is scheduled to be complete in July 2015.

This section of Stringfellow Road sees severe congestion in both directions during peak periods. The project widens Stringfellow to two lanes in each direction from Fair Lakes Boulevard to Route 50, to increase capacity needed with extensive growth in the corridor and resulting increases in traffic. Stringfellow Road carries 23,000 vehicles per day, and is expected to increase to 33,000 in 2034.
