First come the primaries.

Northern Virginians registered to vote in the 11th Congressional District have special election primaries coming up on June 28.

On Sept. 9, voters will elect a candidate to fill U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly’s seat, after his death in office on May 21. Virginia’s 11th district encompasses most of Fairfax County and all of Fairfax City. Prior to the Sept. 9 special election called by the Virginia Governor, both the Democratic and Republican parties will hold firehouse primaries, or caucuses, to select their endorsed candidates for the September election. Firehouse primaries, or unassembled caucuses, are paid for by the political parties rather than by the state department of elections, for voting events outside the November election process. Voters will find the familiar check in and vote process.

Voters should expect to show valid identification.

Democratic Firehouse Primary

“The 11th District Committee is working very hard to make this primary a robust process that is inclusive and accessible, with a broad distribution of voting locations on caucus day,” Manisha Singh said. Singh is chair of the Democratic district committee. The Democrats have 17 locations for their caucus on June 28, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They offer early voting on June 24, 25 and 26, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center. Republican Caucus

The Republicans will hold their canvass on one date, at one location: June 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Fairfax High School, 3501 Lion Run, Fairfax. Early Voting: Friday, June 27 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fairfax Government Center - Room 7. All GOP voters are urged to pre-register for the canvass by June 25.
