Epic Einsteins Take Second in State
Greenbriar West sixth grade students Saiteja Bevara, Dheeraj Bandaru and Ajith Kanuri and team advisor Padmaja Bevara participated and won second place in the state level competition of the Army's eCybermission project. eCybermission is a web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition for students in grades six through nine.

Filing into Chantilly High’s gym, Saturday afternoon, the students made their way to their seats while Kool & the Gang’s classic anthem of rejoicing, “Celebration,” played in the background. They came for the Chantilly Pyramid Minority Student Achievement Committee’s (CPMSAC) 27th annual awards ceremony.

State PTA Volunteer of the Year
Del. Tim Hugo attended the April PTA meeting at Union Mill Elementary to present Kate Trussell with a proclamation from Gov. Bob McDonnell recognizing her as the Virginia PTA volunteer of the year. Hugo commended Trussell for coordinating our Bread Basket program that made over 11,000 sandwiches for Food for Others last year. As of this year, students at Union Mill have already made almost 13,000 sandwiches for Food for Others. Above, with Trussell are her husband, Jeff, and daughter, Sarah.
Community Services Budget Under Scrutiny
$8 Million budget hole threatens programs, public review underway.
The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, which provides social services to thousands of the county’s most vulnerable residents and has come under fire for an $8 million budget shortfall, was given a temporary reprieve by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
Art Teachers Display Their Work
Centreville High art teachers Allison Dreon, Troy Hayes, Kris Killinger, Rory Marcaccio Schaffer and Pam Young will display their works as Artists of the Month at La Bella Luce in the Town of Clifton. The shop is at 7137 Main St., and their show is titled, “Gli Insegnanti d’arte” (Italian for “the art teachers”). Store hours are Wednesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, noon-6 p.m.; Sunday, noon-4 p.m.; and by appointment. The teachers’ work will be on display at La Bella Luce through June and is also for sale. Killinger and Young are bringing their oil paintings; Killinger paints flowers and still lifes, and Young does Tuscan still lifes and landscapes. Dreon will show examples of her photography, Schaffer will offer her digital photography, and Hayes is displaying his portraits of athletes done in pastels.
At Virginia International Music Festival
Westfield High's Concert, Symphonic and Wind Symphony bands plus the Marching Bulldogs participated in the Virginia International Music Festival in Norfolk, April 27 and 28. It featured bands from as far away as Minnesota and International Bands from Belgium, Norway, Albania, plus military bands from each of the Armed Forces. The results from the International Music Festival: Jazz Band, Gold Medal, First Place Division III, Outstanding Solist Andrew Harrington; Concert Band, Gold Medal, Second Place Division I; Symphonic Band, Gold Medal, First Place in Division II; Wind Symphony, Gold Medal, Outstanding Soloist Justin Carpenter, First Place Division II; Marching Band, International Parade of Nations, Gold Medal, Best Music, Best Marching. The four Gold Medals earned by WHS were 4 of the 6 Gold Medals given for the entire weekend of competition. Additional recognition included Grand Champion Jazz Band, Grand Champion Concert Band and Grand Champion Parade of Nations.
