PFC Brendan Murphy has been selected as an Officer of the Month for the Sully District Police Station. He was honored at a recent meeting of the station’s Citizens Advisory Committee.

“PFC Murphy takes the role of community policing seriously,” wrote Lt. Brian Calfee, who nominated Murphy for the award. “He willingly assists the crime prevention officer when called upon to do so, and he was active in the National Night Out activities throughout the Sully District.

Calfee noted that Murphy was recognized for his participation as a member of the Supplemental Public Affairs Bureau when he conducted a live “tweet along” on Aug. 12. “The event was greeted with much support and brought a much more personal view to the world of policing,” said Calfee.

In addition, Murphy has taken on the initiative of being squad training coordinator for the Mid “B” squad. Almost weekly, he researches a topic and then presents it to the squad, using videos and handouts. “The training ranges from officer-involved shootings to physical fitness for law enforcement officers,” wrote Calfee. “Murphy also tracks the training the squad receives from other entities. He actively seeks training throughout Virginia and then brings what he learns back to the squad.”

Murphy furthermore has volunteered to be a field training instructor, participate in an upcoming Breath School and become a new adjunct trainer for the new report-writing system. All in all, wrote Calfee, “PFC Brendan Murphy is a dedicated and reliable employee and most deserving of this recognition.” — Bonnie Hobbs
